So I bought a thing. IR thermometer. Does anyone happen to know what I should set the emissivity at to get an accurate reading off my brake rotors?

I’ve been having some brake issues and want to keep a close eye on them.

If you didn’t get it at Harbor Freight, I’d think it’s set at the factory. Our Fluke is just point and shoot. Align the dots of light and read the temp. Damn things amazingly accurate. Maybe read the instructions?

It’s adjustable and I didn’t shell out for a Fluke. It did have a table in the instructions but not enough items on it to really tell me where to set it in this application.

erm. Oven thermo and oven? When I got a blood oxy meter from walmart, I took it to the local hospital to see how accurate it was. When they quit laughing at such an audacious idea, we tested it on several folks with their pro equipment. Maybe go to a local machine shop or pizza place since you want high temps. Bakery? (fwiw, the oxy meter was dead on for $60)

Could do. Gotta find someone who regularly measures reflective metals... hmm.

I will have a think on this.

Steel is steel in this context. If it’s got anything in that table that’s iron or steel that’ll be fine.

If you want to get a quick feel for accuracy, stick a decent sized lump of unpainted steel in a pot (but not a lump with a flat bottom or it’ll heat to pot wall temp not water temp - use a bit of bar or similar) , b oil it for half an hour, then lift it out, quickly dry a bit of surface, and measure it. It should be reading high 90s Centigrade . If it is, it’s accurate enough for your purposes - you don’t need 1% accuracy ( and they’ll cool more than that in the time it takes you to get out of the car and measure them).

Thanks. I’ll give that a shot.

I get that it’s not going to be 100%, but I want to know I’m at least getting a reasonable estimate.
